Wool Insoles for Wet Weather

Wool Insoles for Wet Weather

Wet feet are something that is often unavoidable when you’re spending time in the outdoors. If you’re not getting soaked on a mountain bike ride or sweating up a skin track in the backcountry, chances are you’ll step in a puddle on your way to work.

You only have to have cold and wet feet once to know how quickly it can ruin your day!

What we love about wool is that it retains its thermal and breathable properties even in humid, damp, or wet conditions, which means that Esker Insoles will help keep your feet feeling comfortable - and spirits high - even when the weather is at its worst.

WOOL TAKES LONGER TO FEEL WET

The technical term for wool’s ability to keep you warm even when it’s wet is ‘hygroscopic insulation.’ Wool can absorb 30% of its weight before you feel it meaning that on a rainy day you will go longer with Esker insoles before you notice any moisture. This is also why they are so great at keeping your feet dry on hot and sweaty days as well!

WOOL WICKS AWAY MOISTURE

Wool fibre has a natural crimp that wicks dampness away from the body; moving excess moisture away from the skin is an important part of staying warm outdoors. The crimp also allows the fibres to breath, creating tiny air pockets that act as insulators by retaining heat (or cooling as needed).

Even when our insoles are soaking wet, these air pockets created by the fibres will keep your feet warm when you need it.

WET WOOL GENERATES HEAT

As water is absorbed into the centre of the wool fibre, the process breaks the chemical bond of the water and creates a reaction that generates heat. Luckily, because of the air pockets created by the crimped fibre, moisture has room to evaporate, so your feet will stay warm without overheating!

WET WOOL DOESN’T STINK

Wool fibre is coated with an oily wax called lanolin. This coating is naturally antibacterial, preventing the growth of mold, mildew, and odour causing bacteria even when damp or wet.

So, when it comes to those times - like having your sweaty feet freeze when you stop for lunch in the backcountry, grinding your way through a multi-day coastal hiking trip in the rain, or simply walking your dog on a damp day - when you know you’re not going to be able to keep your feet dry, you can trust that Esker Insoles are going to help keep them warm and comfortable.
